WASHING BATH LINEN: GOOD PRACTICES
DIRECTLY AFTER PURCHASE
Like ready-to-wear or bed linen, bathroom linen requires a preliminary washing directly after purchase. Why is this? To rid the fabric of possible impurities or chemical traces left by transport, handling, etc.
You may not have known it, but it often takes several washes to release the absorbency of new towels. Hygienic, a first wash is therefore also a good way to offer more efficiency to your linen and this, before any use.
DAILY LIFE
In order to guarantee the resistance of your linen over time, remember to separate dark and light colors - be careful with white towels! - to prevent the sponge fibers from mixing. Then wash bath sheets, bathrobes and washcloths from the same line at the same time. This way, you won't notice any color mismatch between your various pieces.
To wash your towels, prefer detergents without optical brighteners which, in addition to being polluting and irritating for the linen, have never demonstrated their washing power. Also, if you use fabric softener in your machines, be aware that it tends to coat the fibers and make them less absorbent. Instead, plan to add two spoonfuls of white vinegar to the tub before washing.
Do you notice a bad smell of moisture on your towels? Use white vinegar again, combined with hot water, to deodorize your sponge. Let it soak for a while and then machine wash as usual. Also consider adding 100g of baking soda, which not only acts as a powerful deodorizer but also makes towels softer.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WASH MY TOWELS?
Replace your towels about every 3 or 4 days. The same goes for washcloths, which can quickly become a breeding ground for germs. If you are used to using a bathrobe on a daily basis, put it in the washing machine every week or so to keep it clean and soft.
Our advice? Don't share your towels with other family members and don't wait for stains or bad odors to appear before taking action. It is good daily habits that guarantee the hygiene of your textiles!
WHAT TEMPERATURE FOR LAUNDRY?
As a general rule, it is not necessary to exceed 60°C when cleaning your bath towels. This temperature is high enough to remove bacteria from the towel without damaging the fibers. If you need to wash a towel that has only been used a few times, a 40°C program will do.
However, remember that linen manufacturers are the best people to guide you on the subject. So rely on the labels on the products you buy so you can act without mistakes.
DRY TOWELS AND BATHROOM LINEN WELL
With household linen, it is often recommended to air dry. In the case of bath linens, avoid too much exposure to the sun, which tends to harden cotton fibers and, consequently, make the towels rougher.
Also, if you can, dry your bath mats, bathrobes, etc. in the dryer. In fact, these products particularly appreciate the effects of the machine, which makes them come out softer and more plump. Just avoid programs with too high a temperature and don't hesitate to lower the RPM setting to avoid damaging the sponges.
BEAUTIFUL, SOFT, FLUFFY TOWELS
With time and washing, it is possible that your towels or bath sheets show some signs of fatigue. Small defects that can be corrected with the following tips:
- When you get out of the washing machine, get into the habit of pulling on the beds of the laundry to give them back their shape and do it again after drying. If necessary, it is possible to use an iron at low temperature for a better result.
- Some of the curls may come undone over the years. If this happens, cut the threads at the height of the remaining curls.
Thus pampered, your bathroom linen will be able to perfectly fulfill its decorative mission which consists in putting a touch of elegance and contrast in the bathroom.
